A recent study by JYSK among 35,000 persons from 19 European countries shows that almost every fourth person sleeps poorly at night.
Almost all respondents (99.5%) in a large European survey agree that sleep is crucial for an individual’s wellbeing. In spite of this, almost one in four participants (23.3%) reports that they sleep badly at night.
This is one of the conclusions from a comprehensive survey made by JYSK, in which more than 35,000 people from 19 different countries in Europe participated. The answers were gathered during July of this year.
"The study makes us wiser about how people relate to their sleep. That is very useful to us. When we for instance advice our customers on getting the right product for their needs, or when we purchase products, so we have the right assortment for our customers," says Niels Veien, Executive Vice President of Customer Experience, Digital and Marketing.
Eight hours of sleep is optimal
When it comes to the number of hours sleeping, most people (44.7%) agree that eight hours of sleep is optimal. On the other hand, it is only a small part (15%), who actually get those eight hours on weekdays. In the weekend, it is a little bit higher (26.6%).
"Now that we know that most people want to hit the magic eight hours of sleep every night, we would of course like to make sure that people achieve this. Your sleep depends on several factors, but JYSK can help with most things – like mattresses, duvets, pillows, and bed linen – areas where we are experts," says Niels Veien.
What is important for a good night's sleep?
The number in parentheses indicates how many of the respondents consider the factor important or very important for a good night’s sleep.
- A comfortable mattress/bed (95%)
- A comfortable pillow (94%)
- The right temperature (91%)
- Clean bed linen (84%)
- A comfortable duvet (80%)
- Silence (73%)
- Darkness (62%)

The lack of sleep may be the reason why more than every tenth person (13.3%) always feels drowsy or tired during the day. It may also be the explanation for why a large part (42.6%) sometimes takes a nap in the afternoon.
Fetal position is the most popular
Once people fall asleep, two in three people (66.9%) wake up during the night. For most of them (60.7%), they wake up because they have to go to the toilet. Every third person (33.6%) wakes up because they are either too hot or too cold. More than every fifth person (22%) wakes up because they feel pain somewhere in their body.
"There is probably not much we can do about the fact that many people have to go to the toilet during the night. However, feeling too cold or too hot depends on whether you have the right duvet for the season. That is why we recommend people to change duvet from summer to winter and vice versa. Unfortunately, four in ten people do not change duvet. Of course we must do our best to improve that," says Niels Veien.
The most common sleeping position is the fetal position (48%). After that, most people sleep on their stomach (40%), while the rest have different sleeping positions on their back.
