At JYSK’s distribution centre in Kammlach, Germany, a fun exercise has changed the culture and their way of working.

How do you fold a T-shirt?

That question started of a completely new way of thinking at JYSK’s distribution centre in Kammlach, Germany.

Logistics Director Daniel Schöniger wanted to make a point, and therefore he made some of his employees fold a T-shirt.

“At first they thought I was a bit crazy,” he says with a laugh and continues:

“But they had fun with it, and the results really proved the point,”, he says.

As you can see in the video, there were a lot of different ways the employees folded their T-shirts. Some are faster than others, but once they aligned, using the best technique, they all became a lot faster.

“It just shows that you can do things completely differently, and you usually do what works best for you. But what if there was a smarter and quicker way to get things done,” says Daniel.

Increased productivity

Daniel and his team knew that to get the full effect of the experiment, they needed to lead by example.

They therefore changed some of the usual routines and increased communication.

“We have such skilled employees, who are experts at what they do. This gives them some really useful ideas on how to improve and optimise, so we tried implementing some of these things and in some instances, it helped productivity,” says Daniel.

Even though the experiment started a few months ago, the folding exercise still sticks with the employees.

“The experiment comes up from time to time. It’s still in the mind of the employees, and we’re really happy to see that, because it reminds us about the importance of always trying to improve,” says Daniel.
