On 1 July 2025, Retail Manager Lars-Kristian Koudal marks a big milestone with his 40th anniversary at JYSK. As the longest-serving employee in JYSK Germany, his career is a shining example of dedication and a deep-rooted passion for retail.

Originally from Denmark, Lars-Kristian Koudal’s JYSK journey began in Viborg in 1985, and he still remembers his first day.

While he was in school, he joined the local store as a temporary worker. It quickly became clear he had found more than just a job. After school, he started an apprenticeship as a retail salesperson, and his talent and drive led to a promotion to Deputy Store Manager in Herning, Denmark, in 1988.

A large step into a large market

When JYSK expanded into Germany – then operating under the name DÄNISCHES BETTENLAGER – Lars-Kristian seized the opportunity to help set up new stores in the country. Moving to Germany in 1989, he worked hands-on with everything from laying carpet to furniture assembly and sales on opening days. His commitment did not go unnoticed.

As JYSK’s presence in Germany grew, so did Lars-Kristian’s career. He became District Manager, then Area Manager, managing operations across a wide region. In 1992, while supporting yet another store opening, he met his future wife and decided to make Germany his permanent home.

“Moving to another country is a big decision,” he reflects. “But being open to new experiences is how you grow, both personally and professionally.”

“What I value most about JYSK is the culture. You can contribute, get feedback, and grow, if you want to. That’s powerful,” says Lars-Kristian.

A family rooted in JYSK

Lars-Kristian comes from a family closely linked to JYSK. His mother, Inge, sister of JYSK founder Lars Larsen, worked at JYSK until she was 75. Yet, far from receiving special treatment, Lars-Kristian says the bar was often set higher, even by his own standards.

“The expectations were bigger. Not because of who I was related to, but because I didn’t want to let anyone down,” Lars-Kristian says with a smile.

The JYSK family tradition continues into the next generation. His daughter Lisa Kovdal has followed in his footsteps and now works as a District Manager in JYSK Germany, carrying forward the family’s connection to the company.

Colleagues across the organisation speak of Lars-Kristian with great respect and appreciation. Known for his openness, professionalism, and unwavering support, he’s inspired countless colleagues, whether training new managers, leading meetings, or joining a morning jog.

Another colleague, Henning Müller, Retail Manager at JYSK Germany, also offers praise for Lars-Kristian.

“He is a deeply loyal, honest, and highly professional leader who lives our values like no other. He has his heart in the right place, always has a listening ear, and cheers everyone up with his open manner,” says Henning.
