Two sustainability initiatives in JYSK

This spring, JYSK is implementing new production and packaging initiatives that reduce the use of aluminium by 22 tonnes and the needed freight space equivalent of 40 shipping containers annually.

JYSK is continuously working to reduce its environmental footprint, and two new initiatives within production and packaging exhibit another step in the right direction.

“I have many ambitious colleagues who make responsible decisions, and these improvements on production and packaging are great examples of small, but valuable steps in a positive direction,” says Ditte Revsbæk Hansen, who is Sustainability Director at JYSK.

Saving 4.5 million aluminium caps

The first initiative concerns the popular outdoor stacking chairs GUDHJEM and AIDT. These chairs have had an aluminium foot cap on each chair leg for decorative purposes.

Now, JYSK has successfully redesigned the chairs and removed the aluminium foot caps without compromising on quality and functionality.

The change saves a total of 4.5 million units corresponding to 22 tonnes of aluminium every year.

New packaging solution for duvets

The second initiative is a new belly band packaging made of FSC®-certified cardboard, which is implemented on several of the BASIC duvet series, including the two large cool duvet series BREIDTINDEN and STETINDEN (FSC® N001715).

The belly band keeps each duvet neatly rolled up, which not only ensures that customers can purchase a duvet with assurance of minimal handling by others, but it also minimises the space used in shipping containers.

In fact, the new belly band initiative reduces JYSK’s container use with more than 40 shipping containers every year, which means that JYSK can transport 300,000 additional summer duvets within the existing space.
