2 April 2019 it is 40 years since the first JYSK store opened in Aarhus. Since then expansion has been a cornerstone in JYSK, and therefore the anniversary is celebrated with the opening of the company’s first store in Ireland.
40 years have elapsed since the founder of JYSK, Lars Larsen, welcomed the first customers to JYSK in the store on Silkeborgvej in Aarhus in Denmark, on 2 April 1979.
Since then customers have been welcomed in over 2,700 stores in more than 50 countries across the world.

As a natural part of the continuing expansion of JYSK the anniversary is marked by opening the company’s first store in Ireland.
“I couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate JYSK’s 40th anniversary than to add another country to the JYSK world map. Expansion has been part of the DNA of JYSK since the first store opened 40 years ago, and I am happy to be able to mark that by opening our first store in Ireland. This is the last big country in Europe, where people until now has not had the opportunity to go to a local JYSK store,” says founder and chairman of JYSK, Lars Larsen.
15 new stores planned
Lars Larsen will cut the ribbon for the first JYSK store in Ireland, which will open in the town of Naas, located approximately 40 kilometers from the capital Dublin.
At the opening on 2 April he will be accompanied by the Danish ambassador of Ireland, Uffe Baslev, and the mayor of Naas, Billy Hillis.
“The news that we open in Ireland has already had a lot of positive attention in local media, so I hope, that a lot of customers will come and celebrate this special day with us,” says Lars Larsen and continues:
“We are excited to welcome the Irish customers and present them to our assortment and the Scandinavian culture, which has been an important part of making JYSK a success in all the other countries, where we have opened. When we look at the market, we have very high hopes that JYSK will have great opportunities to expand in Ireland,” says Lars Larsen.
From the beginning the initial goal is to open 15 stores in Ireland, creating 200 new jobs in the process.
