JYSK is a main sponsor of the FSC Design Award and joined the 11th annual competition on May 10th.
The air is full of anticipation as hopeful Danish design and architecture students are gathered for the FSC Design Award 2017 in Denmark's capital, Copenhagen. 45 beautiful wooden designs are displayed in a large and bright lobby.
The purpose of the competition is to encourage students to combine sustainability and aesthetic design in wood through innovation and creativity. And they have resolved this in a wide variety of ways: Everything from building blocks and a first-aid kit to functional desks and chairs in all shades.
JYSK has supported the FSC Design Award for a number of years because we would like to help put a focus on sustainability and spread the knowledge of the FSC brand. FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. In JYSK we have many items made of FSC-labeled wood, including all our wooden garden furniture.
Wins a trip to Honduras
The ten students who, according to the judges, have made the best bids to combine sustainability and design, are called on stage as the winner is about to be announced. The tension increases. Time is filled. But then it happens:
"The winner of the FSC Design Award 2017 is Rikke Palmerston Christensen," announces the host.
Rikke’s design is a wardrobe with space for everything from a jacket and hat to gloves and umbrellas. The prize is a trip to an FSC-certified forest in Honduras, where Rikke will prepare a version of her winning design in collaboration with a local workshop. At the same time, she will be able to experience the importance of using sustainable materials with her own eyes.
What does FSC mean?
FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. You probably already know that FSC means that a tree is sourced from sustainable forests, where no more wood is felled than the forest can reproduce. But did you know that FSC is much more than that? That FSC is about environmental, social and economic responsibility? Did you know, for example, that…
- FSC sets strict requirements for the use of pesticides and chemicals and ensures that the aquatic environment is protected?
- FSC poses a number of social requirements that make local areas benefit from the income from the forest?
- FSC ensures that native peoples and locals are guaranteed the right to use the forest?
- Parts of FSC forests are completely protected, and areas of endangered animals and plants are preserved?
- Forestry workers in FSC forests are ensured proper conditions, including education, safety equipment and fair pay?
- The FSC brand can be placed on wood from all over the world - from the tropical rainforests to the Siberian needle forests?
- Worldwide, 195,597,731 hectares of forest are FSC certified (May 2017)?
